Sarah JonesDeputy Sheriff Sarah Irene Jones - 10/19/2008
MCSO Deputy Sarah Haylett-Jones succumbed to injuries sustained two days earlier when she was struck by a vehicle driven by a teenager.

She was directing traffic on State Road 45 near Airport Road, just outside of Bloomington.  A wrecker was removing a stranded vehicle from a ravine, in front of Melton's Orchard.  The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 pm.

Deputy Haylett-Jones was initially transported to Bloomington Hospital, but was later air-lifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where she remained until she died of her injuries.

Deputy Haylett-Jones had served with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office for eight months.  She had previously served with the Montgomery, Alabama police department for 1½ years and was a US Air Force veteran.  In her youth, she served as a captain of the Michigan State Police Explorers.

She is survived by her husband, two brothers, parents, and her grandmother.
Don OwensCaptain Donald Eugene Owens - 08/15/1975
BPD Captain Donald Owens was shot and killed by a prisoner he was escorting from court. Captain Owens was filling in for the city bailiff who was off for vacation. During a struggle for Captain Owens' service weapon, a shot was fired. The bullet passed through the prisoner also striking Captain Owens. Captain Owens was able to call for an ambulance, but later died at the hospital.

Captain Owens had served with the Bloomington Police Department for 27 years.  He was survived by his wife and son. Lodge 88 was renamed shortly after his death in his honor.
Jerry GreenPatrolman Jerry A Green - 07/15/1967
BPD Patrolman Jerry Green died as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident during a vehicle pursuit that occurred on 03/25/1955.

While on routine patrol, he and fellow Patrolman Dale Mishler began chasing a vehicle near 14th and Walnut streets. At approximately 1:25 am, on Ellettsville Road at Stout's Creek Hill, Patrolman Mishler lost control of their squad car causing it to roll over as both officers were thrown from the vehicle.  Patrolman Mishler died while en route to Bloomington Hospital.

Patrolman Green remained in critical condition with a fractured skull and a severe injury to his left eye causing him to be partially blind.  He was unable to return to active duty and received a disability pension.  His health continued to decline, having never fully recovered from his injuries and from suffering two heart attacks.  He died after being admitted to Bloomington Hospital for surgery on July 15, 1967.

The suspect initially fled from the scene, but turned himself into police later that day.  He was charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide and driving while under the influence.

Patrolman Green served with the Bloomington Police Department for five years at the time of the accident and was a World War II veteran.  He was survived by his wife, stepson, stepdaughter, four grandchildren and two sisters.
Dale MishlerPatrolman Dale W Mishler - 03/25/1955
BPD Patrolman Dale Mishler died as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident during a vehicle pursuit.

No PhotoChief of Police Samuel Perry Cardwell - 12/24/1928
BPD Chief Perry Cardwell was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at a local football game on 12/01/1927.  His injuries caused him to leave the police department and his health continued to decline.  He finally succumbed to his injuries one year later.

Chief Cardwell was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and had served with the Bloomington Police Department for two years. He was survived by his two sisters.
No PhotoSpecial Police Officer Ralph Wayne Pogue - 11/25/1928
BPD Special Officer Ralph Pogue was shot and killed while he and another officer served a search warrant at a home in Bloomington. The owner of the home was suspected of selling liquor.

When the officers arrived and started reading the warrant, the suspect grabbed it out of the officer's hand and ran to a back room and grabbed a handgun. As the other officer struggled with the man, Officer Pogue approached to assist but was shot in the stomach.

After firing the shot, the suspect surrendered to the other officer. As he was being transported to city hall he attempted to escape but was shot in the leg and subdued with the use of clubs when he continued to struggle.

Officer Pogue was transported to a local hospital where he remained until succumbing to his injuries the following day.

The suspect was charged with manslaughter in connection with his death after claiming the shot was fired accidentally.

Officer Pogue had only served with the Bloomington Police Department for a few weeks. He was survived by his parents and five siblings.
